The aorta is the largest artery in the body. To check the size of the aorta and the blood flow through the aorta, a non-invasive imaging procedure called an abdominal aortic ultrasound is completed. This scan uses high-frequency sound waves to look through the skin and muscle of your abdomen to view the aorta. If the aorta increases in width, it forms an aneurysm. Abdominal aortic aneurysms are present in approximately 5% of males over the age of 60 years. Aneurysms are more common in men than women. If undiscovered, rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm is the 10th most common cause of death of men in the US and leads to about 15,000 deaths per year.
