Devices and their leads may fail on occasion, but regular follow-up visits can help anticipate pending issues before any symptoms occur. Patients are seen on a regular basis in the outpatient device clinic. Pacemakers and defibrillators are evaluated six weeks after implantation and then every six months thereafter. If a problem or arrhythmia is detected, follow-up may be more frequent. On occasion, your pacemaker, ICD, or implantable loop recorder may require adjustments. Device optimization is done in the electrophysiologists office by passing a programming wand over your device so that a computer can make an immediate adjustment.
