Dr. Oommen took care of me — as a patient and a person. For this, I will always be grateful.
One quiet Saturday morning last June, I began to feel extremely ill. My heart began to beat incredibly fast, and no matter what I tried, I was unable to slow it down. I went to the nearest urgent care facility, and as I began to lose consciousness, the doctors called for an ambulance. When I arrived in the emergency room, I was diagnosed with SVT, Supra Ventricular Tachycardia; and it took several hours for the ER doctors to bring my heart rate down to an acceptable rate. The head ER physician told me the New Mexico Heart Institute (NMHI) would schedule an appointment for me to see one of their specialists as soon as possible. She said that NMHI’s electrocardiologists were absolutely top notch and assured me that I would be in the best possible hands.
That ER doctor certainly knew what she was talking about. A few days later, I met with Dr. Santosh Oommen, an electrocardiologist at NMHI. After the initial tests and questions, Dr. Oommen sat down to talk with me. With absolutely no history of cardiac or vascular disease in my family, I was understandably confused and afraid. Dr. Oommen went beyond the standard questions and took the time to understand the factors that might be influencing my health and wellbeing. He explained my SVT diagnosis in detail, using a visual diagram to make sure I understood what was happening with my heart. Then he carefully described all of my treatment options, allowing me to choose the one I felt best for me.
One month later I went to the hospital for a catheterization and ablation to treat my SVT. On what arguably could have been the scariest day of my life, Dr. Oommen managed to make me feel calm, cared for and safe. Before performing the procedure, he met with me to go over the details and make sure I felt at ease. In the Cath Lab, I knew I was in expert hands; Dr. Oommen and his team worked with precision and ease, all the while keeping me comfortable and informed. Afterwards, he talked with me again, letting me know how the procedure had gone, what to expect, and answering any questions I had.
In the months that followed, Dr. Oommen and the NMHI staff continued to provide me with outstanding care. At each appointment, he took time to go beyond the test results and ascertain how I was actually doing.

At each appointment, he took time to go beyond the test results and ascertain how I was actually doing. Ten months later, I am happy to say that his treatment was successful; my symptoms are gone and I have never felt better.
Dr. Oommen is a marvelous electrophysiologist and a gifted physician. Indeed, he took expert care of my heart. But he did so much more. Dr. Oommen took the time to make me a partner in the process and let me know my healing was a priority. He steered me through a difficult time and helped me find my way back to a happy, healthy life. Dr. Oommen took care of me — as a patient and a person. For this, I will always be grateful.
