The New Mexico Heart Institute Foundation (NMHIF) is dedicated to enhancing the cardiovascular health of all New Mexicans through education, cardiovascular health promotion, and research. The foundation has become an important resource for Albuquerque and New Mexico through it’s work in education for healthcare providers, patients and the public. The health promotion programs through its New Heart Center for Wellness, Fitness and Cardiac Rehabilitation has changed lives by providing high quality guidance to people with heart disease and those at risk for heart disease.
The NMHIF was formed in 1985 by Dr. Barry Ramo through a generous gift from a family of one of the Heart Institute’s patients. The board of directors consists of physicians who share a common vision for its work. It has received support from the physicians at the New Mexico Heart Institute, Foundations along with patients and their families who appreciate the valuable work of the Foundation.
The NMHIF educates health care professions in the state on the latest in management of patients with heart disease and programs to prevent heart disease. For 25 years, the Foundation has sponsored the annual Current Concepts in Cardiology event, attended by more then 300 health care providers throughout the State. The proper management of heart attack patients is critical in getting rapid treatment within 90 minutes after arriving at the hospital. Our annual Emergency Care conference teaches paramedics, health care providers and physicians what the latest approaches are to dealing with this emergent problem.
The Foundation oversees lectures on diet, exercise, stress reduction and heart disease prevention, which are all available to the public.
Project Heart Start
Almost 400,000 people suffer from sudden cardiac arrest each year. Project Heart Start (PHS) is dedicated to saving lives by teaching life-saving skills. Participants learn to recognize signs of a heart attack, to perform high quality CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation), to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) and to save a victim of choking. The program has taught more than 50,000 people these life-saving skills. In January 2016, the Foundation wrote and the Governor signed a bill making the Project Heart Start components be a requirement for graduation from all the New Mexico’s Public Schools.

New Heart Center for Wellness, Fitness and Cardiac Rehabilitation
New Heart was developed in 1972 by Dr. Richard Lueker. Now an integral part of the New Mexico Heart Institute Foundation, The New Heart cardiac rehabilitation program helps hundreds of people each month come back from a heart attack, heart surgery, heart transplants or heart failure. Cardiac Rehabilitation is instrumental in providing a bright future for people who thought that not possible. This 12 week/36 session program has been shown to lower the risk for future heart attacks and reduce the risk of heart failure or dying from heart disease. At New Heart, participants receive a tailored exercise program, nutrition and weight management advice along with stress reduction training. New Heart is located in a beautiful facility at 601 Lomas Blvd. in the Martineztown neighborhood of Albuquerque, just east of downtown.
